WADA to monitor composition of COVID-19 vaccines
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has stated that it will monitor the composition of the various vaccines for COVID-19 that are developed and that anti-doping authorities will be alerted in case any prohibited substance is used as an ingredient in the same.
The body further stated that the composition of vaccines can not be known this early but assured that they were confident that any banned ingredient won’t be used in vaccines. Earlier, World Athletics Chief, Seb Coe had vouched for healthy athletes to take a back seat in terms of receiving vaccination.
‘WADA will monitor all available information’
Issuing a statement on the COVID-19 vaccine, “Athletes can be confident WADA will continue to monitor all available information and advise them and other members of the anti-doping community in the event an ingredient of a vaccine might be problematic,” WADA said.
“In the highly unlikely event that a vaccine may cause a possible anti-doping rule violation. WADA’s oversight of any subsequent results management will ensure that vaccines and the principles of anti-doping do not come into conflict,” it added.
“To be clear, despite the novelty of these vaccines, there is no reason to believe such vaccines would contravene anti-doping rules,” the statement further clarified.
