The Golden State Warriors are on a good run at the moment, but they did suffer a huge setback on Monday night when Jimmy Butler tore his ACL against his former team, the Miami Heat. Till his injury, Butler recorded 17 points, three rebounds, and four assists in under 21 minutes. The forward struggled to put weight on his right knee, as Buddy Hield and Jonathan Kuminga helped him to the locker room.
It was a comfortable win for the Warriors as they defeated the Heat in a 135-112 blowout. The club has been surrounded with some distractions involving Kuminga’s situation, but with four wins in a row, the Warriors continued their push for a direct playoff qualification. The win improved their record to 25-19 as they sit at eighth in the Western Conference standings, while the Heat are in a similar position in the Eastern Conference standings with a 22-21 record.
Following the injury, the entire Chase Arena went silent as Jimmy Butler grimaced in pain while grabbing his right knee. Butler, who has become a favorite in the locker room, has been an instrumental figure for Steve Kerr‘s team. The 36-year-old was averaging 20 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists in 38 appearances this season.
Unfortunately, it was the same knee that Butler had a meniscus tear in 2018 and an MCL sprain in 2024. NBA reporter Shams Charania has now reported that Butler has suffered a season-ending torn right ACL.

This is a huge setback for Stephen Curry and his men, who would have hoped for the best prior to the MRI scans. With still two weeks to go for the trade deadline, it remains to be seen how the Warriors will react to Butler’s injury.

This injury changes everything for the Warriors now. While Curry has continued to put up impressive numbers and has been selected as an All-Star for the 12th time in his career, the Dubs still find themselves in the play-in spots. It is safe to assume that their championship window is now closed for this season.
Warriors have been on a good run of form
Since the turn of the year, the Warriors have gone 7-3. They had started to gain some momentum heading into the All-Star break. In fact, over the last 16 games, they have gone 12-4. Considering their success in the last few weeks, the Dubs would have been confident of cracking into the top-six of the standings and earning themselves a direct playoff qualification.
Butler’s absence presents both an emotional and tactical challenge for the Warriors. Not only was he giving them 20 a night, he has been cornerstone of their defensive system, bringing energy, leadership, and grit to a roster built on experience and adaptability. Butler’s playoff experience and history would have made the Warriors a serious threat in the postseason.

Curry will have to shoulder much of the scoring burden heading forward while Kerr will look to his younger players to fill in for Butler’s absence. It is a tall ask for Curry at 37-years-old to carry his team in a highly competitive Western Conference. But unfortunately for now, the Warriors are left with no other options.
