The Golden State Warriors are approaching a critical juncture as they aim to capitalize on Stephen Curry’s remaining prime years. With the NBA trade deadline on February 6 fast approaching, the team is actively searching for a star-caliber player to complement Curry’s $215 million contract and bolster their championship prospects.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Warriors are actively pursuing a marquee playmaker or scorer to complement their core of Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. is reportedly exploring the market for a high-impact star to help raise the team’s championship aspirations following their rough patch. Charania joined NBA Today to report on the matter.

I’m told that the Warriors are on the real hunt for a star, a playmaker, a scorer alongside Stephen Curry… The debate with the Warriors and teams that look into that situation is, for them, are they going to find that externally, outside of this roster currently? Or will it be in-house, with a player like Jonathan Kuminga?

Shams Charania said on Friday’s NBA Today show on ESPN

Charania pointed to the team’s offseason pursuits of Lauri Markkanen and Paul George to pair alongside Curry and Green, which ultimately fell through. However, with key role players like De’Anthony Melton sidelined due to a season-ending knee injury, the Warriors’ roster depth is under scrutiny, and front-office pressure is mounting.

The player at the center of their trade talks is 22-year-old forward Jonathan Kuminga. While Kuminga has shown flashes of brilliance, including his recent outburst against the Houston Rockets, his fit alongside Stephen Curry and Green remains uncertain. The Warriors are reportedly weighing whether to bet on Kuminga’s development or look for external solutions via a potential blockbuster trade.

Potential stars for Warriors to pair with Stephen Curry

Despite a promising start to the season, the Warriors’ recent five-game losing streak desperately showcased the team’s need for reinforcements, especially at a time when Stephen Curry cannot be asked to carry a substandard roster every night. As the trade deadline looms, several high-profile names are amongst potential targets for the Warriors to bolster their squad.

An intriguing option for the Warriors will be New Orleans Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram, who has been embroiled in trade rumors following his team’s rough start to the season. Ingram’s scoring ability and positional versatility make him an attractive fit alongside Curry and Green.

Another potential candidate is Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler, whose strained relationship with Heat GM Pat Riley could pave the way for a move as the Heat look to reestablish their ‘lost’ identity.

The Warriors have also reportedly shown interest in Kyle Kuzma of the Washington Wizards and Collin Sexton of the Utah Jazz. While neither player carries the star power of Ingram or Butler, they could provide much-needed offensive firepower and depth to a team looking to regain its footing.

Golden State’s decision to pursue a major trade will depend on several factors, including the cost of acquiring a star alongside Stephen Curry’s contract and the long-term implications for the roster. Trading for a player like Ingram or Butler would likely require parting with young assets such as Kuminga, Moses Moody, or draft picks. It would be a significant gamble but one that could elevate the Warriors back to legitimate title contention on the back end of an ageing Curry’s career.
