Was Donald Trump reason behind Raptors fans booing US National Anthem?

Canadian fans at the Toronto Raptors - Clippers game booed the US National Anthem in protest towards Donald Trump's words

Ever since Donald Trump entered the oval office for the second time in his life, he has been on the front pages for several executive decisions he took. However, it seems he will not stop at what he has already done and has talked about hiking up tariffs against neighbors Canada, Mexico and others.

But those decisions would usually impact the stock market and set diplomats in motion to try start negotiations with Donald Trump and his office. Or it could impact traders who are the first to be impacted by those hikes.

The likes of China, BRICS countries, Mexico and European nations, all had retaliatory messages to Donald Trump and his staff. They all suggested that to hold their ground, they would hike tariffs of their own. The debates across news channels have been centered around how those tariffs will impact the economy.

But then, the President of the United States doubled down on his earlier stance that he would like to turn Canada into the 51st state of the Union. This topic had already caused some major rumblings across networks when he originally said it. But yesterday after reiterating his stance, the Canadian people decided to voice their opinions.

Earlier today, the Los Angeles Clippers visited landed up at the Scotiabank Arena to take on the Toronto Raptors. As is customary prior to the game, the visiting team’s national anthem is performed. When the performer started singing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’, the crowd inside the arena instantly started booing.

Donald Trump’s words could spark problems with Canadian sports teams

The crowd booing the US National Anthem was in line with how Canadians view the 47th US President’s opinions about their country. All throughout the rendition, the boos continued. However, when the singer then switched over to sign ‘O Canada’, it drew cheers from the same crowd.

If this is how fans feel about the American National Anthem, it could spell trouble for sports teams in Canada. Trump already has a major standoff with the NBA and its fans. The country has a few sports teams that are part of American sporting leagues. The Toronto Raptors being one.

If fans start to boycott any association with Americans, it could turn into a political discourse that could threaten the existence of those teams. The likes of the Raptors, the seven NHL teams based out in Canada, MLB’s Toronto Blue Jays could find it difficult.

Even the brand-new Toronto Tempo WNBA expansion franchise could wind up its operations before it could start. Any trade wars or political discourse that could threaten free trade or movement of personnel could jeopardize their future.
