Was trying to improve and win: Toronto Raptors’ Head Coach talks about days of struggle

Nick Nurse

Nick Nurse became the head coach of Toronto Raptors in 2018

Any NBA enthusiast who is aware about the dominance of Toronto Raptors, would know it is not just in the Eastern Conference but against all the teams. From coaching teams in Iowa and Canada to running a 58-game winning streak with the Raptors, Nick Nurse has experienced all. Nurse’s offensive strategies have not only played Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry. But also helped their overall game plays, especially in clutch situations.

In a recent interview as published by Essentially Sports, Nurse spoke about his days of hardship. As many say, “It is the journey that decides the growth of success.” Such is the case of Nick Nurse. Raised alongside 8 siblings, Nurse is a Iowa native, where he has played multiple sports. During his time as a player in Northern Iowa, he made a 3-pointer record of 170/363 (46.8%) shots converted over four years. Later, he began his stint with coaching at the tender age of 23.

Remembering those days, the 2019-20 NBA Coach of the Year said, “The job I had in Belgium, it was where I always wondered where I was gonna be week-to-week. It was like you gotta win this game this Saturday or you’re packing yourself up several times during that season.

“So that uncertainty was difficult, but man looking back I loved all those jobs, and at that time in life, they meant the world to me, and I was just trying to get better at my craft and win.”

In 2018 Nurse was promoted as the Head Coach of the Raptors, which some suggest led to the transformation of the Toronto side. The rest being history, Nurse has left no stone unturned to make Raptors one of the favourites every time in the NBA season.
