The young Indian opener, Abhishek Sharma, has had a sensational start to his career in India colours. In the first T20I against Zimbabwe at Harare, he was dismissed for a duck and India suffered a defeat in that game. However, he came back strongly in the second game and smashed his maiden century in national jersey.
He was at his explosive best and scored 100 runs off just 47 balls, with 7 fours and 8 sixes. The Zimbabwe bowlers had no answer to his onslaught, as he smashed them to all parts of the ground. He replicated the hype that he had created during IPL 2024, while opening the innings for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
His parents used to come to the stadium and watch him play during IPL 2024. However, this time around, his family watched his maiden T20I century and celebrated at home with joy and fervor. The video has gone viral on social media. It was absolutely a dream come true for his family to watch their son take giant strides in international cricket.
Abhishek Sharma has big shoes to fill in after the T20I retirement of Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli opened for Team India in the T20 World Cup 2024 and took them to a World Cup win. However, after the final, both these veterans announced their retirement from the shortest format of the game. It is now time for the next gen to take on the mantle of performing for India on the biggest stages. The preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 to be held in India, has already started.
Abhishek Sharma was at his explosive best during the IPL 2024. He opened with Travis Head for Sunirsiers Hyderabad and the duo became the most destructive opening combination during the tournament. He has the ability to face any bowling attack with his audacious shots and he has displayed the glimpse in the second T20I.
India need an opener who can destroy bowling attacks right rom the word go and Sharma has showed that he has all the qualities in him to take on that role in T20I cricket. The team management and the Indian fans will be hoping that he continues to build on this innings and takes the world by storm.
