Marta Kostyuk made history for Ukraine as she became their first player to reach the singles quarterfinal at the Olympic Games after a marathon match against Greece’s Maria Sakkari. She fought an uphill battle throughout the match, having lost the first set 4-6.
She then had to dig deep in the second set which went to a tiebreak. After coming through 7-5 in the tiebreak, the Ukrainian carried the momentum into the final set and triumphed 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. The win was emotional for Marta Kostyuk, who has been actively involved in spreading awareness about the Russia-Ukraine war.

Marta Kostyuk and other Ukrainian tennis players make history as three players reached second round of Olympics for first time ever
Ukraine had one of their largest tennis contingents at the Summer Games this year. Three Ukranian players contested in women’s singles amidst their crises. Dayana Yastremska, Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk proudly represented their country while also displaying great tennis.
All three of them made it to the second round, which is the first time this has happened. Yastremska unfortunately bowed out in that round against Columbia’s Camila Osorio. Svitolina was ousted by the reigning Wimbledon champion, Barbora Krejcikova, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 in a hard-fought battle.
Kostyuk, however, continues to write history after taking out Maria Sakkari to enter the quarterfinal in her first-ever Olympics appearance. Kostyuk and Yastremska withdrew from doubles after winning the second round possibly due to the harsh scheduling that the organizing committee has been criticised for.
