Barbora Krejcikova lifted the Venus Rosewash dish with pride after beating Jasmine Paolini in three sets in the 2024 Wimbledon Championships final. Having struggled to find form year, this was a monumental win for the Czech on a surface she was never very comfortable on.

Krejcikova had won the French Open in 2021 and since suffered multiple injuries. Even this year, she did not make deep runs at many tournaments till she arrived in SW19. Even in London, she almost faced a first-round exit against Veronika Kudermetova but survived the scare.

She survived another scare in the semifinal against Elena Rybakina. After losing the first set, Krejcikova bouched back to win the match and make it to the final. In the title match, she started strong and won the first set against Paolini, who fought back to take the contest to the decider.

Luckily, the Czech player stayed strong and converted a crucial break point to win 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. She let out a big roar and immediately ran into the crowd to meet her team and celebrate the win with them.

Krejcikova is just the fourth Czech player to win the women’s title at Wimbledon in the Open Era, after Jana Novotna, Petra Kvitova, and Marketa Vondrousova.

With her Wimbledon win, Barbora Krejcikova made sure her name gets added to the prestigious list of winners at the oldest Grand Slam tournament in tennis. It was all the more special for her as she now has her name alongside her idol the late Jana Novotna.

After the win, she recalled an early conversation with Novotna and how she encouraged her to pursue a career in tennis.

During the period when I finished juniors I didn’t know if I should play pro or go the way of education. Jana was the one who told me I had the potential and that I should definitely turn pro and try to make it. Before she passed away she told me to go and win a Slam, I achieved it already in Paris in 2021 and it was an unbelievable moment for me.

The World No. 32 is now the second-lowest-ranked player to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title since the WTA rankings began in 1975.
