Two altercations that occurred on the parquet this Tuesday night overshadowed the Indiana Fever’s thrilling victory over the Connecticut Sun. One of them is Caitlin Clark getting struck in the face by the Sun defender, Jacy Sheldon. Another one involved Clark’s teammate Sophie Cunningham, where she was ejected for throwing hands on Sheldon.
That said, Clark was involved in much controversy after the game. She did not choose to shy away from the media duties and attended the post-match press conference. The Fever star appeared content to let coach Stephanie White answer all of the questions on the game’s officiating, and even more content that White was taking advantage of the opportunity to attack the officials.
White assured reporters at the beginning of the postgame press conference that she would answer any questions they had regarding the officiating. One of the reasons why the game ultimately went out of control, according to White, was the referees’ choice not to dismiss Marina Mabrey.
Everybody’s getting better, except the officials.
Stephanie White told the reporters
Following White’s mic-drop statement, Clark made the ideal facial expression to convey her strong agreement with her coach:

A head coach showing signs of support to his/her players is always good to see. This is exactly what White is doing. The Fever HC is doing everything in her power to help Clark in high-stress scenarios like this and shouldering the majority of the difficult inquiries so Clark can concentrate on her strongest strength this season.

Nevertheless, Clark is determined to achieve huge glory with the Fever this season, after falling short in the WNBA playoffs last season. Her recent performances are a clear showing of her mentality in the game and what she wants to achieve going forward into the season.
Columnist Christine Brennan opened up on the WNBA’s poor officiating after the Fever-Sun game
Christine Brennan, an award-winning columnist, offered her opinions on the WNBA’s refereeing. The organization “failed to meet the moment” when Mabrey struck Clark, in her opinion. In summary, Brennan is arguing that Mabrey should have been kicked out by the WNBA. By the looks of it, Brennan’s annoyance seems justified as she took to her X account to voice her anger.
The WNBA continues to fail to meet the moment. Terrible decision to allow Marina Mabrey to stay in the game. People are watching as never before. And this is what they see?

Clark and the Fever handled the situation with grace. But the Fever HC made it a point to make her opinions known during the post-match press conference regarding the officiating. Without a doubt, the WNBA has a lot of clarifying to do in the next day. But will Tuesday’s errors teach the WNBA a lesson? Time will tell.
Sophie Cunningham hit back for Caitlin Clark after a heated tussle
Sheldon broke away on a quick break with less than a minute remaining, with the Fever well under control. Sophie Cunningham, another star of Fever, retaliated by putting her arms around Sheldon’s neck and slamming her face down on the ground. This moment showcased Cunningham’s support for the wrongdoings done to Clark at the start of the game.

Following a brief but heated altercation in which the players exchanged yells and made physical contact, Sheldon, Lindsay Allen, and Cunningham were eventually dismissed. It’s important to note that Cunningham earned her black belt in taekwondo at the young age of six, and she showed signs of it on the court against the Sun.
