Carlos Alcaraz made a thumping start to his debut Olympic Games as he secured a straight sets win against Lebanese World No. 275 Hady Habib. The front-runner for the gold brought all his flair to Roland Garros to pick up where he left off after winning the French Open in June.

The Spaniard pulled off a Roger Federer-like single-handed backhand shot in the match, adding to his ever-growing highlights reel. He managed an around-the-net passing shot against Habib after the latter managed an incredible volley. He wrapped the 6-3, 6-1 win almost as quickly as Novak Djokovic did in his match against Mathew Ebden.

Alcaraz’s footwork and tennis IQ have been marveled at in the last few years and he constantly proves why, with shots like this. Here’s a look at his incredible athleticism that was on display against Habib:

Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz secure first-round wins as rain washed out a majority of matches in Paris

Top seed Novak Djokovic made a statement on Stade Philippe Chatrier as he downed Australian Matthew Ebden 6-0, 6-1. This may be the Serb’s last chance at securing every title in the sport as the Olympic gold has eluded him for two decades.

His toughest opponent in recent times, Carlos Alcaraz, also got off to a flying start in Paris. Besides the singles, he will also be playing doubles alongside Rafael Nadal in a much-anticipated match against Argentina.

The weather in the city of love has been gloomy throughout the week, with rains affecting the opening ceremony too. Only the two main courts at Roland Garros have roofs to protect against downpour while other courts are subject to nature’s will. The rains grew stronger midway through the first day and matches on all courts other than Court Philippe Chatrier and Court Suzanne Lenglen were called off for the day.
