Mauricio Pochettino’s ‘equal opportunity’ claim offers hope for MLS stars

USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino made headlines ahead of his side’s win over Jamaica as he promised ‘equal opportunity’ to all his players. The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss took over the team in September.

Though they won both legs against Jamaica, questions have been asked about his team selection. The ‘problem’ takes root from the fact that there are only four MLS players in Pochettino’s squad, although 17 were developed through the US youth soccer system.

It’s not easy to play in the MLS. They have the same possibility of playing as those in the Premier League, La Liga, in Belgium and France.

Puchettino clarified that the players know about this in private and now in public as well. He used the example of Inter Miami and Lionel Messi to demonstrate how the ‘best player on the planet’ plays in the MLS.
