Emma Raducanu scripted one of the greatest sporting stories when she hit the ace that won her the US Open 2021 against Leylah Fernandez. The teenagers who were part of the first all-teen finals at the US Open since 1999 had an amazing run at the Grand Slam with both the players grabbing the attention of global media for their heroics at the Slam.
Emma had been in limelight for a while now since she became the youngest British woman to reach the 4th round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships where despite being outside the Top-300 rankings, she was handed a wildcard and she justified her selection perfectly. Her popularity increased during the tournament which forced the organisers to schedule her 4th round match on the Centre Court.
Emma’s journey in New York started getting attention after she entered the main-draw and after her 2nd and 3rd round victories. Her performances at the Flushing Meadows started getting a huge number of followers on her social media handles.
Emma started the tournament having 400k followers on Instagram and before going into Saturday’s finals, Emma had 750k followers. By the time she might have checked her phone after lifting the trophy, her follower count crossed the 1M mark, an increase of 250K over a span of 2-3 hours.

After her 4th round victory over American Shelby Rogers, Emma started becoming the crowd favourite having huge cheers every time she entered and left the court and also received big cheers during her matches.
Writing about this in her column, former champion Tracy Austin said, “I was indoors at Flushing Meadows for some of this match and yet I could still hear exactly who won each point because the Arthur Ashe crowd was so much in favour of Emma Raducanu. Many of them may have had no idea who she was when the tournament started, but they’ve adopted her and taken her in.”
With Emma yet to reach back in Britain, her success has already got the attention of tennis legends and the country’s politicians including the Prime Minister and the Queen of England.
