The Houston Rockets, led by Kevin Durant, suffered back-to-back defeats to the Portland Trail Blazers. While their previous loss to the Trail Blazers was a nail-biter, the game on Friday night saw them blow a 13 point lead heading into the fourth quarter. A disappointing and underwhelming final quarter saw the Rockets lose 111-105 at the Moda Center.

After consecutive losses to the Trail Blazers, the Rockets find themselves at sixth in the Western Conference standings with a 22-13 record, just 0.5 games ahead of the Phoenix Suns. Meanwhile, the Blazers have been flying lately and their latest win extended their winning streak to five games. Currently sitting at ninth in the standings with a 19-20 record, the club have a good shot at cementing their place in the play-in spots.

Despite the losses, the Rockets remain a strong contender in the West. After finishing second in the standings last season, they were beaten by the Golden State Warriors in the first round in seven games, highlighting their inexperience in the postseason. Hence, they made a move for Kevin Durant in the offseason, who struggled with results during his time with the Suns.

The move to the Rockets was Durant’s third club since leaving the Warriors in 2019. The two-time NBA Champion has not won a championship since leaving the Warriors and has won just two playoff series in the last five years.

Hence, his move to the Rockets is seen as him “chasing rings” by many. Irrespective of their opinions, Durant has continued to play at a high level and is currently averaging 26.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists in the 32 games he has featured in this season.

With Alperen Sengun ruled out due to injury, Durant has seen his offensive workload go up. He did put in a solid shift on Friday as he recorded a double-double of 30 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Unfortunately, his performance was not enough to get him over the hurdle.

During a timeout in the fourth quarter as the Rockets blew their lead, Durant was visibly upset and threw his bottle on the floor.

With Fred VanVleet spending a lengthy time on the sidelines and Sengun ruled out for at least a couple of weeks, the 37-year-old has been clocking heavy minutes since the turn of the year. The Rockets will be hoping that Sengun will be back soon, and the other teammates step up during his absence.

Fans react to Kevin Durant’s moment of frustration

It is normal for emotions to get the better of a player when things are not looking good during a match. But the clip of Durant’s moment of frustration was quick to go viral across social media and the internet did not hold back.

Durant can still elevate the Rockets, but the structure underneath him is not holding up. It will be up to head Ime Udoka and his coaching staff to find a solution and avoid over-burdening Durant till Sengun returns.

Kevin Durant passes Wilt Chamberlain on NBA All-time scoring list

Durant faces criticism for not winning a championship outside of the Warriors and will continue to do so till he wins one. Even though he won the Finals MVP in 2017 and 2018, many are still not convinced he can win a championship as the “bus driver”. But one thing that cannot be debated when it comes to Durant is that he will go down as one of the greatest scorers of all time.

While the game ended in a disappointing loss, the 2014 MVP did make history on Friday as he surpassed Wilt Chamberlain for seventh place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. He achieved the mark with 7:57 remaining in the third quarter, hitting a three-pointer, which brought in cheers from the crowd in Portland.

Following the match, Durant was asked about passing Chamberlain in his locker-room interview.

To be amongst the greats is always an honor. Wilt is somebody I studied and try to look up as much as I can on a player like that. He set a standard for NBA players and grateful to reach that and inspired by what he produced to the game of basketball. Portland is such a classy, classy city for recognizing me in that moment and honoring me.

Currently at seventh in the list with 31,435 points. He will be eyeing to surpass Dirk Nowitzki, who is sixth on the career list with 31,560 points. Just a matter of time for Durant.
