The quarterfinal match between Iga Swiatek and Danielle Collins at the 2024 Paris Olympics was a drama-filled affair. What started as a straightforward match in favor of the Pole turned into an amazing three-setter content with an ending no one expected.
Swiatek had started the match with a couple of early breaks to take the first set 6-1. However, Collins was not going down without a fight as she channeled the fire inside her to throw Swiatek off course in the second set and win it 6-2.
The third set brought a lot of drama to the match. At the very start, Swiatek was on the verge of a breakpoint when she had to defend another one of the Collins’ serves. While having returned the serve cleanly, the Pole was staying in the rally and defending every shot the American threw at her before a strong backhand hit her in the ribs.
Swiatek was on the ground in pain when Collins went up to apologize. It seemed all fine until Collins took a medical timeout and was soon unable to play the game. This gave Swiatek a win (6-1, 2-6, 4-1 ret.) and a spot in the semifinals.
