WATCH: Incredible scenes in La Liga – Penalty shout from Real Madrid ultimately ends up as a penalty for Sevilla
Real Madrid and Sevilla played out an emphatic 2-2 draw in La Liga. With this result the La Liga title race is still open but has now shifted from the hands of Real to their rivals Atletico Madrid.
Toni Kroos scored a late equalizer for Madrid, one which was awarded to Eden Hazard later for his deflection from the Herman’s initial shot. The match had a number of talking points throughout but it was one moment which looks to have ultimately decided the La Liga title race this season.
Toni Kroos’ late strike earned Real Madrid a point at the death
The match was evenly poised at 1-1 with 20 minutes to go after Asensio equalized for Los Blancos.
The talking point came in the 75th minute when Sevilla had a corner at Real Madrid’s end. The corner was deflected out by Eder Militao and Real launched a pacy counter of their own which caught out the Sevilla defenders.
Toni Kroos, Karim Benzema, Valverde and Vinicius flooded forward and Sevilla had no one at the back. Karim Benzema went on himself with the ball from the half way line ultimately rounding off the Sevilla keeper Bono, who brought him down illegally.
The referee was quick to point to the spot and a penalty was awarded. However, the Sevilla players complained of hand ball incident in the Real Madrid box and VAR intervened.
On further inspection it was found that Militao had unintentionally handled the ball while clearing it out. The on field referee had a check himself on the pitch-side monitor and awarded a penalty for Sevilla thereby cancelling out Real Madrid’s penalty at the other end.
The decision to award the penalty for Sevilla wasn’t a correct one even though the ref awarded it after viewing visuals on the pitch side television. The ball had struck the arm but Militao did not have a clue about it and did not intentionally handle the ball.
The decision will be widely debated all over the world and in Spain for the next few days as it has taken away the title from Real Madrid’s hands.
Ivan Rakitic ultimately scored from the resultant spot kick and handed Sevilla a 2-1 lead with 15 minutes remaining.
