Rookie Jared McCain sustained a season-ending injury after tearing his lateral meniscus in his left knee. The 16th overall pick in the 2024 draft, playing for the Philadelphia 76ers, recently underwent knee surgery. This has left him in braces and on crutches. This has sidelinied him indefinitely and no timeline remains for his return back to the squad.

Before the NBA drafted him, the rookie had already gained popularity on TikTok thanks to his active presence and entertaining personality. This has earned him a massive following. Now, even after undergoing surgery to resting, he continues to entertain his fans. In a recent video on his TikTok account, the rookie danced and limped on crutches alongside his friends.

Watching Jared McCain move to Sam Smith‘s La La La soundtrack has left some fans bewildered. Many are impressed by his dedication, dubbing him a “Full-time TikToker, part-time basketball player.” While he faces criticism for letting social media distract him from the game, no knee injury can keep him off TikTok.

The young player discussed the importance of consistency in building a following, his posting ritual and shared the story of how he bagged his biggest feature to date: Bronny James.

A couple of months ago, Jared McCain appeared on his teammate and veteran Paul George‘s podcast. During the interview, one of the co-hosts asked the rookie about how he got started with TikTok and whether more people recognize him as a basketball player or for his renowned TikTok dances. The answer might surprise everyone.

I feel like I look better than them and I dance better than them. Luckily, I did it during COVID. So, it was like home-school, so I didn’t have to go to school. You know when you have no followers, it’s kinda embarrassing. Consistency, that’s the main thing. … I did it after every game. I get called TikToker more than basketball player by far, especially in college.

Although his knee injury might keep him out of the Rookie of the Year race, McCain started the season with a bang. Before sustaining the injury on December 13, he was averaging nearly 15 points a game on 46% shooting. This is not a bad start for the rookie.

McCain also addressed the criticism surrounding his TikTok usage. In the interview, he explained that it doesn’t interfere with his schedule, typically taking only about few minutes to create a post. On the contrary, many people still mistakenly believe he spends hours on TikTok, constantly planning content and perfecting his dance routines.
