There’s no point in blaming Tyler Bass. ‘Wide Right,’ it’s forever etched in the lore of the Buffalo Bills. It’s as if the Buffalo weather wanted to witness a repeat of history at Orchard Park, nullifying Josh Allen‘s every attempt to get his team into the conference championship.
Trailing by three points, the Bills managed to keep Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes standing on the sidelines as they ate up six minutes from the clock. But Allen’s inability to find his target back-to-back set up a field goal. On came Bass, who lined up the ball.
One key detail to remember is that there was a massive cross breeze going from west to east. The 27-year-old connected with the ball, and for a moment, it seemed the hit would creep down the middle of the goalposts. However, the weather had been dreadful even before the wild card game came to haunt the Bills.
The wind forced the ball to miss the right-hand post of the Chiefs goal, and the chance to close the gap went begging. If Bass had buried the field goal, then the Bills would have been playing in the next round; instead, it’s the Kansas City Chiefs and the Mahomes who will play their sixth consecutive AFC Championship game.
It finished the Chiefs 27–24 Bills. While walking back to the locker room, the camera caught Allen consoling Bass.
Bass blamed himself for the Bills’ loss
That miss must have reminded some of the older Bills fans of Scott Norwood‘s 47-yard miss in Super Bowl XXV. Bills Mafia is once again on the wrong side of their tussle with the Chiefs. Back to the drawing board for them, but before that, there were somber scenes inside the locker room, and none was more disappointed than Bass himself.
Ultimately, it's completely on me. Got to do a better job of getting through to my target. I've been here long enough to know that. It didn't work out. I feel terrible.Bass
Allen, who had 26 completions for 186 yards and one touchdown, along with 12 carries for 72 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns, was very close to taking his team to the next round, but everything fell apart.
Losing to anybody. At home. It sucks. I wish it wouldn't have been put in that situation.Allen
He also didn’t blame Bass but rather said they win as a team and lose as a team.
One play doesn't define a game. It doesn't define a season. You win as a team, you lose as a team.
This was the Bills’ third loss in the divisional round in four seasons. Every time, it was the Chiefs that stood in their way.
