It was sheer madness at the Allianz Arena last night as Spain edged past France in a high-octane semi-final to book a berth in the grand finale of the Euro 2024. This is going to be Spain’s first appearance in the Euro final since 2012 where they went on to toy with Italy.
Lamine Yamal scripted history in the semi-final where he became the youngest goal-scorer at a major tournament (World Cup/ Euros) at the tender age of 16 years and 362 days. Following Yamal’s historic strike which was an absolute pearler, his father was seen celebrating deliriously in the stands.
Posted on X which was formerly known as Twitter, a user captured the manic celebrations of Yamal’s father who was seen prancing to his heart’s content after his son’s wonder strike helped Spain restore parity against France in the semi-final.
France secured an early lead through Kolo Muani‘s thumping header as early as in the 9th minute. From a Kylian Mbappe cross, Muani managed to power the ball into the back of the net without a fuss as the World Cup finalists got their noses ahead.
Spain equalized in the 21st minute through Yamal, who created space ahead of him and let one fly for the far left corner as Mike Maignan‘s full-stretched dive made no difference whatsoever. Moments later, Jesus Navas teed off Dani Olmo who did an exceptional job of moving the ball onto his right foot before smashing it into the back of the net.
With this victory, Spain became the first finalist of the ongoing edition of the tournament and will be playing the winner of the second semi-final tonight between England and Netherlands.
A glance at Spain’s journey in Euro 2024
It has been a rampant run for La Roja ever since the inception of the tournament as they started Euro 2024 with a bang. Thumping Croatia 3-0 in the curtain-raiser, Spain followed it with another clinical performance as they edged past the defending champions, Italy by a solitary goal.
Albania couldn’t withstand the sheer fury of the unstoppable Spanish force while Georgia’s fairytale run was being nipped mercilessly as Spain hammered four goals past them. The quarter-final witnessed Spain eliminating the hosts, Germany with a last-gasp winner in the extra time. In the semis, France did put up a show to cherish but it wasn’t enough to break the will of a resolute Spain.
