LeBron James is perhaps the most well-known active sportsperson in America today. Having lived 60% of his 40 years in the public spotlight, ‘The Chosen One’ is a household name.
Not only is he famous for being a basketball freak and a GOAT candidate, James has also cultivated an image as the ultimate family man in sports. Getting Bronny James picked by the Lakers with a guaranteed contract has cemented this image. After all, playing a pro sport in the same setting as your son is an almost mythical rarity.
However, with all kinds of positive publicity, some negatives are attached. The James family’s omnipresence in NBA social media has caused a lot of people to have intrusive thoughts. And one such intrusive individual got onto the Crash Dummies podcast with words that should’ve stayed unsaid.
The caller was asked which celebrity he’d like to switch places for a day. His answer, without basically skipping a beat, came out – ‘Savannah James‘.
“I probably had to be Savannah James. Like, Imma be able to call LeBron ‘Daddy!’ and nobody’s going to think it’s weird. He’s LeGOAT…I lost my dad when I was younger. I used to always look at him on the court like ‘Damn man, what if he’s my dad’.”

Understandably, given the kind of demographic that posts on Twitter, the above video has gone viral and NBA Twitter, in particular is having a field day with the clip. This poor man will never live this clip down. The Crash Dummies hosts even tried to give him an out, but the man opted not to take it.
It’s amply clear from the audio that whatever parasocial relationship the caller has with LeBron is affecting his worldview. Probably not in a healthy fashion. It’s one thing to want to be the spouse of a celebrity for a day, to swap places. But the way the caller went about talking about his relationship with the James family was way past the acceptable degree of ‘weird’!
However, this kind of thing is nothing new, and it does happen all the time. Celebrity worship and culture have long since been out of control among the American public. Often, the celebrities in question do nothing to elicit this kind of hero worship – though LeBron certainly has a bravado that could cause people to worship him. We can only hope that these relatively harmless obsessions don’t turn into real-life trouble for the NBA legend.
