Novak Djokovic did not get much competition from Holger Rune in the fourth-round match of Wimbledon but he expressed his anger at the crowd’s behavior, which overshadowed his impressive victory. On the Centre Court, the crowd was chanting Rune’s name but an irked Djokovic thought they were ‘booing’ him.

Djokovic is no stranger to the crowd’s boos and jeers, and even though their behavior fuels him to do better, he this time did not ignore it and gave it back to them by ranting about it during his winner’s speech. After winning the second set, Djokovic even pouted to mimic the crowd’s ‘boos’ or, let’s say, their ‘Ruuuuuune’.

During his post-match interview, when the interviewer explained to the Serb that the crowd was actually chanting Rune’s name, Djokovic did not accept it at all. He said that though the crowd was cheering for Rune, a section of them were booing him. He accused that section of the crowd of disrespecting him and called them out by bidding ‘Gooooood Night!‘

They were, they were. I don’t accept it. No, no, no. They were cheering for Rune, but they were also booing me. I have been playing on this tour for 20 years and I know how it works. I will focus on those people who respect players, who have paid money to watch tonight, love tennis, and appreciate the players.

This was not the first time Djokovic reacted to the Wimbledon crowd’s boos. Last year, during the final against Carlos Alcaraz, they distracted Djokovic with shouts during his serve.

Holger Rune says the crowd was chanting his name instead of booing Novak Djokovic

Holger Rune recalled his previous match with Novak Djokovic and explained that it’s not the first time he heard his name from the crowd who stretched the vowels so that it ended up sounding like, ‘boo’. The Dane feels that even though Djokovic complained about the crowd’s behavior, they probably did not play a big role in the match.

If you don't know what was happening, it probably sounded like 'boo'. But if we all know what happened, it was my name. If he didn't remember, it could probably sound different to him. I don't think it played a massive part in the match.

Djokovic will next face Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals. The Serb lead 2-1 in their head-to-head meeting.
