Afghanistan scripted history at the Arnos Vale Stadium as they booked their semi-final berth in the history of T20 World Cup for the first time at the expense of a formidable Australia. Afghanistan got the better of Bangladesh in a nail-biting finish but the contest was nothing short of cinema. To underscore the magnitude of the fray, Rashid Khan, the captain of Afghanistan pulled off an antique that sent the world into frenzy.
It was in the final over of the Afghanistan innings where runs were hard to come by. After smashing Tanzim Hasan Sakib for a maximum in the second ball, he wanted a couple of runs on the third and went dashing in for the danger end. Sadly, enough Karim Janat failed to run back. Rashid was safely back in his crease but he threw his bat midway in the pitch to simply announce his discontent.
Eventually it didn’t matter because he did come back on strike in the last ball of the innings and hammered a massive six over the cow corner as Afghanistan piled up 115/6 at the end of their allotted 20 overs.
The show from Rashid Khan simply amplified the emotions which were on display for everyone to witness and the entire world couldn’t stop talking about it. Eventually after a nail-biting thriller, Afghanistan made their way to the semis as Australia crashed out.
A glimpse at how Afghanistan knocked Bangladesh out with a dramatic win
It was a dramatic encounter to say the least. Winning the toss, Afghanistan opted to bat first. On a track that had its own share of shenanigans, Rahmanullah Gurbaz top scored with 43 while Rashid Khan’s late lunge allowed Afghanistan to pile up 115/5.
Coming out to bowl they were up against an in-form Litton Das who stood tall till the very end but had no support whatsoever from the other end. Das stayed unbeaten for an excellent 54 while Khan’s 4/23 coupled with Naveen-ul-Haq‘s 4/26 left Bangladesh skittled out for 105, falling short of a revised total of 113 from 19 overs.
