WATCH: Roger Federer ‘back in business’ but admits he is not pain free
Roger Federer
Roger Federer celebrated his return to the tennis court with a victory over British player Dan Evans. In a contest that lasted well over two grueling hours, Federer had the last laugh when he finished the match with a trademark down the line backhand, winning in three sets 7-6 3-6 7-5. With this victory, Federer has won an ATP match every year since the last twenty four years. Up next, in the Quarter Finals Federer will take on the Georgian player Nikoloz Basilashvili.
After the match Federer admitted that he wasn’t exactly pain free during the match, and he doesn’t actually mind a little pain. For Federer, it’s more important how he feels the day after the match, two days after the match, and six months into his return. “It’s important how I feel tomorrow and the next day and for the next six months basically. It’s been a long and tough road for me.” Federer said.
Federer believes he played a great match, and said that he enjoyed the whole process of getting back into competitive tennis after injury, thanking his entire team for their efforts and dedication. “I’ve had a wonderful team around myself that always supported me throughout and that made it much easier.” Federer concluded.
Olympics a major goal for me, says Roger Federer
Now that he has made a winning return to tennis, Federer can plan ahead. In the past Federer has talked about wanting to stay in the best shape from the Qatar Open to about the tournament preceding the Wimbledon. And then, go into the Wimbledon and the Olympics feeling his best physically and mentally.
The Tokyo Olympics 2021 holds a special significance for Federer because of the fact that he had to pull out of the Rio Olympics in 2016 with a left knee injury. Needless to say, Federer will aim for the Singles Gold Medal, something that has eluded him so far.
