Vladimir Putin caught dozing at 2022 Winter Olympics opening ceremony
The much-awaited 2022 Winter Olympics kicked off on February 4 in Beijing, China as the world witnessed a stupendous opening ceremony. The ceremony witnessed the Chinese capital become the first city to host both the summer and winter Games. Despite the global pandemic ravaging the world, the IOC has decided to go ahead with the Games given the success of the Tokyo Olympics last year.
A series of boycotts over various geopolitical issues brought the Games into the spotlight. And while the opening ceremony set the tempo for the Winter Olympics, it was yet again a politician who stole the show. Russian President Vladimir Putin hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons as he attended the opening ceremony of the 24th Winter Olympics.
Vladimir Putin dozes off as Ukraine athletes enter
As the Ukrainian contingent was introduced on the NBC broadcast, the camera panned on to president Putin. The politician was caught with his hands in his lap and his eyes shut. Putin then quickly woke up as the on-air commentators discussed the tensions that have grown between Russia and Ukraine.
President Putin sprung to his feet when the Russian Olympic Committee’s contingent was announced. He waved to the athletes as cameras clicked around him before returning to his solitary seat. In 2017, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned Russia from competing in the Beijing Olympics because of anti-doping violations. Russian athletes are competing as the Russian Olympic Committee.
