The co-main event of UFC Vegas 54 featured a light heavyweight contest between two mammoths of the division. Ion Cutelaba (16-6-1 MMA, 5-5-1 UFC) took on Ryan Spann (19-7 MMA, 5-2 UFC) and fireworks were promised from this one.
Ion Cutelaba’s last fight against Devin Clark was an absolute masterclass. He battered him for over 3 rounds before getting the unanimous decision victory. Ion looked better than ever and he was looking to start a title run with a dominant performance over Spann.
Ryan ‘Superman’ Spann was coming from a loss against the former title challenger, Anthony Smith. He talked about his previous losses in the pre-fight conference, and he promised he’d do anything in his capacity to get back in the win column.

Round 1- Spann and Ion got to the center of the octagon, and Spann started pushing Ion back. He knew Ion was looking for those takedowns and he wanted him to wrestle while moving back. He saw an opportunity and landed a flush 1-2 combination that stunned Ion. Cutelaba recovered well and landed a big takedown to get momentum back in his favor.
He started controlling him on the ground, but Spann powered him way back up, he got a little too aggressive and Ion took him down again. He was putting his hands on his chest to get the ground and pound going, but Spann got back up again. Ion threw a big overhand punch that missed, he stumbled, and Spann secured the guillotine choke. He got on top and finished the fight.
