WATCH- Sreesanth presented with Kerala cap after being named in squad for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for the first time in 7 years

S Sreesanth

S Sreesanth is set to return to competitive cricket after being named in the Kerala squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy which is set to take place early next year thereby ending a seven-year wait since his ban from the game for involving in spot-fixing during the Indian Premier League in 2013. Earlier, it was expected that the 37-year-old’s return to competitive cricket would happen at a local tournament in Alappuzha, but the tournament was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sreesanth was banned in 2013 for spot-fixing by using signals on-field. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, the World Cup-winning pacer was given a ban along with fellow bowlers Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila. While initially a life ban was handed out, following a lengthy process of appeals, the same was reduced to 7 years. After the end of the ban, the 37-year-old had stated that he wishes to return to competitive cricketing action again.
Sanju Samson to captain Kerala
Sreesanth was presented with the Kerala cap after being named in the squad. The pacer had always maintained that he was aiming at returning to cricket post his ban. “From last May, I have put my heart and soul into training,” Sreesanth had earlier said. “So when I read about domestic season being a non-starter, I was shattered. I even thought of quitting the game but thought I wouldn’t be doing justice to myself as all the efforts I’ve made to play the game would have gone down the drain. If the domestic season in India is cancelled, I will have to look at other options. If there is no cricket here, I might as well request the BCCI to allow me to play abroad.”
Sanju Samson will captain the Kerala side with Sachin Baby as his deputy. Other players to watch out for include Basil Thampi, Jalaj Saxena, Robin Uthappa, Vishnu Vinod, Salman Nizar, M.D. Nidheesh and K.M. Asif.
