Wayne Rooney has been a proper footballing icon during his time in England and especially with Manchester United. The forward donned the iconic No.10 for United during his playing days, captaining the Red Devils from 2014 to 2017. United legends took on Celtic on Saturday night as Rooney scored for his old side in style.
38-year-old Rooney decided to call time on his career in 2021. Even though the player has drastically transformed physically, his footballing skills hadn’t gone anywhere. From donning the United kit to scoring his side’s opening goal, fans were thrilled to see the legend score for their club once again.
Rooney opened the scoring from a free-kick, in a sublime effort from the edge of the box. The opposition keeper stood rooted to the spot as Rooney worked his magic once again. Clips of the same show the crowd erupting in cheers as a United ‘player’ scored a free-kick for the first time in two years.
Following the game, Rooney stated that he can still do well with the ball at his feet and it’s just the running part that is a trouble.
Fans react to Wayne Rooney’s sublime free-kick against Celtic
Wayne Rooney is up there with Cristiano Ronaldo and several other Manchester United legends at Old Trafford. A fan commented that the Englishman has still got it and that it’s a joy to see legends coming back to their home turf. A fan jokingly stated that he’s better than every player in Erik ten Hag‘s squad. Moving onto a discussion of legacy in the Premier League, a fan placed him third, only behind Mohamed Salah and Thierry Henry.
While many reminisced the ‘good old days’, a fan said that players like Rooney who are ready to ‘die’ for the badge have become a rarity. A few couldn’t comprehend the extreme change in his physicality and body after retirement, laughing at how drinking too many beers ‘did him dirty’.
Ironically, it appears that Wayne Rooney finds it easier to win games while being on the pitch rather than managing from the touchline. The Englishman hasn’t had a good time managing clubs, although he has taken charge of Plymouth Argyle after a series of failed stints at other clubs. As things stand, Rooney is currently on a losing streak, and has only managed to pick up one win in his side’s last six games.
