“We are not hijacking or kidnapping…” Rapper Ice Cube once revealed TRUTH behind NBA’s media power to Joe Rogan
With its 3-on-3 format, Ice Cube's 2017 invention, The Big 3, puts a distinctive spin on conventional basketball.
The BIG3, Ice Cube‘s three-on-three basketball league, has existed for more than six seasons. It has given former NBA players Allen Iverson, Chauncey Billups, Kenyon Martin, and other stars more time to pursue their professional basketball careers. The league is still thriving despite the pandemic, having secured television deals.
But, the NBA has now stood firmly against it. This angered the rapper and he went on a F**k the Gatekeepers podcast tour in July. In the Joe Rogan Experience, he has talked about his frustrations. The NBA is out to get them, he claimed. He clarified that the Big Three is viewed as a danger by the league and that it has made some unsolicited backdoor moves.
He said,
I'm not trying to compete in any way shape or form with the NBA. We are very complimentary. So, I don't understand why they would do some of the things that are being done behind the scenes. Encouraging people to not sponsor us, encouraging networks not to play us. We've been able to survive, but at a certain point, it’s just redundant and ridiculous. We got to fight back in some way, shape or form.
He continued by saying they are not hijacking the competition and don’t know why the NBA is doing this to them,
What’s crazy is that we got their former Hall of Famers as part of this league. So it’s not like we hijacking them or yeah, you know, kidnapping them. They want to be a part of the league
Ice Cube has been vocal about the NBA sabotaging his league
This is not the first time he complained about the NBA. He had gone around accusing Adam Silver and the NBA of sabotaging his league five months back
Ice Cube criticized Adam Silver, the NBA, and the media for their lack of efforts to increase their visibility. In his opinion, fans might find an alternative in the Big 3 during the NBA offseason. According to the award-winning rapper,
I don’t give a f*ck about working with the NBA. What I want them to do, when I say ‘work with us,’ is to stop working against us. Stop doing that bullsh*t behind the scenes. Mainstream media, you know, they ain’t f***ing with us, and that’s cool. We can do it ourselves. We still on the rise without these motherf***ers. We don’t need them. You don’t need them.
With its 3-on-3 format, Ice Cube’s 2017 invention, The Big 3, puts a distinctive spin on conventional basketball. As opposed to being an NBA rival, Ice Cube saw his league as a supplemental addition to the basketball scene.
