The Kansas City Chiefs (2-3) host the Detroit Lions (4-1) in Week 6, looking to revive their campaign after the initial setbacks. The Chiefs and the Lions are playing each other for the 16th time, and the second time in two years.
The Lions and the Chiefs first played on November 25, 1971, at Tiger Stadium in Detroit, with the home team sneaking away a win. In their 14 meetings since, the Lions have only won five more times, while the Chiefs have won nine of their matchups. In their last meeting in 2023, the Lions edged out the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in a close 21-20 game.
The two teams were the top seeds in their conference last year and were favored to meet in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs made it to the finale at the Caesars Superdome, while the Lions were eliminated by the Washington Commanders in the divisional round. The Lions are once again in the running for a top-seed finish.
After a season-opening loss to the Green Bay Packers, they bounced back and have won the last four games. They are currently third in the NFC with a less strong strength of schedule as compared to San Francisco 49ers (4-1) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-1).
Meanwhile, the Chiefs are 2-3 for the second time in their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ career. Their two wins so far came against the New York Giants and the Baltimore Ravens. In Week 5, they were brought to their knees by the Jacksonville Jaguars in a cinematic affair. The slow start is not ideal, but they have previously rebounded from similar figures to end the 2021 season with 12-5 and made it to the AFC Championship, where the Cincinnati Bengals defeated them.

Why can the Detroit Lions win?
The Detroit Lions are among the top teams in terms of yards per game, having registered 1,825 total yards in five games. They are also the highest scoring offense in the league with 174 points racked up so far, which is more than one score away from the second-place Indianapolis Colts.
The rushing attack of the Lions has been stellar in the past four games. In those games, they have 157 rushing yards per game (2nd in the league) and 4.8 yards per rushing attempt (9th in the league). Meanwhile, the Chiefs’ run defense is not very promising. They have given up 123.4 rushing yards per game, and they only stack the box 18.6% of the time, which is ranked 23rd in the league.

The Lions’ defense is also in the top ten of defensive statistics. The team has bounced back so gracefully after the humbling loss to start the season, and it has shown in the multiple perspectives of the team. Furthermore, Jared Goff is also playing exponentially better, though he’s not leading any charts. Goff is expected to stay on course and add woes to the Chiefs’ unit.
Why can the Kansas City Chiefs win?
The Kansas City Chiefs have the advantage of playing at home. They have won one and lost one at Arrowhead this season, and they would prefer to keep increasing their winning record at home.
The Chiefs’ offensive unit has become much stronger, putting their best performance this season on showcase against the Jaguars in Week 5. The Chiefs totaled 476 yards, including 158 rushing yards, which was their highest total of the season. The single blemish on their offense was the 99-yard pick-six that cost them the game.
Except for that, Patrick Mahomes seemed to have an excellent day, accounting for 378 total yards while throwing for 318 passing yards and two touchdowns.
The defense, on the other hand, was in shambles on Monday night. They allowed the Jaguars to score more than 30 points for the first time in a full calendar year. But despite that, the defense has shown grit in three of the rest four outings this season.
With the AFC West battle hanging in a tight balance, the Chiefs will focus on getting all cards right before a crucial divisional game next week and get back on track with two back-to-back wins.
