Austria’s Dominic Thiem created history when he lifted his maiden Grand Slam title at the U.S Open 2020. Thiem became the first male born after 1990 to win a Grand Slam title in 16 years. Furthermore, with this victory, he etched his name in the Top-3 for the year-end rankings for the first time.

In the most topsy-turvy of events, the 27-year-old paved way for himself after losing three consecutive Major finals. He beat Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-7(8) in the final to break the dominance that Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer maintained over the Slams.

Thiem finally reunited with hard-earned laurel!

After initially lifting the trophy on 14 September, only now has the Austrian champ reunited with it. Upon the delivery of this accolade at his abode, Domi expressed his joy. He wrote, “Welcome Home,” and posted a picture of himself with it on Twitter.

To achieve this astounding feat, the World No.3 defeated Jaume Munar, Sumit Nagal, Marin Cilic, Félix Auger-Aliassime and Alex De Minaur in the initial rounds in Flushing Meadows.

Thiem went on to knock out U.S Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev in three-tight sets in the semis. However, Dominic was pushed to the limits in his final bout against Zverev. Even after being two sets and one break behind, the Austrian managed to come atop in a battle that lasted for 242 minutes.

By doing so, he became the first player to make a two-set comeback at the U.S Open since 1949.
