“We’ll support them when we can”- Bellator’s Scott Coker reacts to Khabib Nurmagomedov’s success with Eagle FC’s foray in America
Scott Coker-Khabib Nurmagomedov
Khabib Nurmagomedov has finally made big moves as a promoter since the time he left his fighting career. Just a month after his retirement, Nurmagomedov brought this promotion by the name of Eagle Fighting Championship [Eagle FC] in November 2020 to build it much better and bigger for Russian as well as international fighters as well outside of Russia.
Since then Khabib has signed the likes of UFC Hall of Famer Rashad Evans, former UFC lightweights Kevin Lee and Diego Sanchez, former UFC flyweight Ray Borg, MMA Legend Sergei Kharitonov and kickboxing great Tyrone Spong. Also, Khabib has signed MMA Legend Chael Sonnen as the official analyst for Eagle FC.
While Khabib’s former boss at UFC, President Dana White hasn’t talked much about the former’s promotion, Bellator MMA President Scott Coker is rather excited to see how Eagle FC will turn out. With the promotion now finally having held its event in the USA, it will be exciting to see how far will the Russian MMA Promotion go.
Scott Coker talks about 3 decade-old work relationship with Khabib Nurmagomedov’s coach
Coker came into the post-event press conference of Bellator 273 to address questions in a media scrum which also included talking about Khabib’s Eagle FC as well.
“I mean one thing about Khabib and Ali [Abdelaziz, Khabib’s manager] and Javier Mendez [Khabib’s striking coach], we’re working together for many years you know. Javier and I have been working together for probably 30 years now. So there’s a lot of trust, there’s a lot of friendship and Khabib you know is a super honourable martial artist and we have a good relationship with them, and we will support them wherever we can,” said Coker.
“I told them I said ‘Look, we have a business to run as well but when we can support you we will and it’s nothing off the table,” Coker concluded.
What do you make of Coker’s helpful word for Khabib’s Eagle FC having successfully taken its first step in the USA with its latest event EFC 44? Do you foresee a cross-promotional event between Bellator MMA and Eagle FC in near future? What will be your most preferred fight to make if that ever happens?
