England’s Wembley stadium has been chosen to host an extra Round of 16 tie in the Champions League. Dublin were scheduled to host 4 matches in the Euro but the city has been ruled out of this year’s competition by UEFA.

Ireland’s government failed to assure organisers that the Aviva Stadium would be at least a quarter full for its four scheduled games. Dublin’s group stage matches have been shifted to St. Petersburg stadium in Russia.

UEFA President Ceferin said: “UEFA wishes to express its appreciation and gratitude to the cities of Bilbao and Dublin – both of which are considered as good venues to host future UEFA events – the national and regional governments of Spain and the Republic of Ireland, and all local stakeholders for their dedication, professionalism and efforts over the past years.

UEFA said tickets for matches in Bilbao and Dublin would be cancelled and refunded, and those ticket buyers will receive priority access to tickets in the reassigned venues.

“UEFA would also like to thank the Football Association of Ireland and its dedicated staff for their excellent collaboration and hard work, and is looking forward to continuing to work with the remaining 11 host associations in delivering EURO 2020 matches.”
