With the new season just months away, basketball fans and analysts have continued to keep up with the activities involving players in the off-season. As young players continue to attain recognition in the league, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas has pointed out the best youngster he would start a team with.
The 42-year-old, who played 11 seasons in the NBA during his career, made this known in a recent episode of The OGs Show. While speaking with show hosts Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller, the veteran was asked which young player he would go for if he was starting a franchise.
According to Gilbert Arenas, his first pick will be San Antonio Spurs prodigy Victor Wembanyama. The young Frenchman is widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation. It’s a no-brainer that to get an NBA franchise started, a general manager will look to get forwards. Wemby is undoubtedly a talented center forward.
I'm a go Wemby. As a general manager, you don't have to be brilliant... If I have to go like guards, probably Ant-Man. He has what a culture needs from a star player... Never seems like he's rattled... and you need that type of player's confidence.Gilbert Arenas said
Furthermore, the basketball veteran pinpoints his next desirable player as Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Anthony Edwards. The 23-year-old popularly known as “Ant-Man”, is a rising star in the NBA. He even made the major leap this year to represent the USA at the Paris Olympics. In the opinion of Arenas, getting Edwards onboard will be the second move and it’s not surprising, given the incredible shooting skills he possesses.
Anthony Edwards doesn’t want to play another World Cup for Team USA
After he was included in the Team USA roster for the 2024 Olympic Games, Anthony Edwards once again recorded a personal win. His reputation has skyrocketed after impressive performances for the Timberwolves, which resulted in selection for his first-ever appearance at the Games.
Prior to the Olympics however, he was included in the USA squad that competed at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. While it was definitely an achievement for the youngster, Edwards has revealed his intention to not play if the opportunity arises next time. When asked if he will play in another World Cup, the shooting guard said: “Hell nah”.
Although he didn’t give specifics of why he would not play, it is likely that the Olympics experience rubbed off on him far more than the World Cup. Whichever case, Edwards will be going into the new season on the back of winning a gold medal on the world stage.
