“What a gem of a knock!”- Twitter reacts as Curtis Campher’s scintillating knock guides Ireland to a 6-run victory over Scotland
Curtis Campher and George Dockrell
Ireland’s Curtis Campher shone with the bat with his brilliant quickfire to guide Ireland to a six-wicket win against Scotland on Wednesday, October 19, at the Blundstone Arena in the seventh Group stage match of the T20 World Cup 2022.
After winning the toss, Scotland opted to bat first; Micheal Jones’ 86-run knock (off 55 balls) helped the team to put on 176/5 in 20 overs. Ireland didn’t have a flying start, as they kept losing quick wickets at regular intervals. Irish star batter Paul Stirling (eight-run off 10 balls) failed to impress, while the other opener Andy Balbirnie could add only 14 runs from his bat.
No. 3 batter Lorcan Tucker played a 20-run knockoff 17 balls (with two fours) and went back when Mark Watt dismissed him in the ninth over.
In the next over, Michael Leask trapped Harry Tector with good-length delivery, making Tector go for a slog sweep, but the ball didn’t connect well with the bat; Chris Greaves at deep mid-wicket caught it. They were reduced to 65/4 until Campher and George Dockrell resurrected the Irish innings. They stitched a 119-run match-winning stand between them.
Ireland didn’t need great effort then, as the duo of Campher and Dockrell did the job for Ireland with their unbeaten knocks. Campher scored a brilliant unbeaten knock of 72 runs off just 32 balls with seven boundaries and two sixes at an impressive strike rate of 225.5.
Dockrell, equally, gave his full support by scoring a crucial 39 runs off 27 balls (with four boundaries and a six at a strike rate of 144.44) to help Ireland win by six wickets (with six balls left).
Meanwhile, Watt, Brad Wheal, Safyaan Sharif, and Leask picked up one wicket each. Campher was adjudged the Player of the Match, and Ireland is still alive in the T20 World Cup.
