On the latest episode of SmackDown, Cody Rhodes squared off against Raw’s Chad Gable in the main event. Following an enthralling back-and-forth encounter, Rhodes picked up a hard-fought win. However, the Undisputed WWE Champion injured his knee during the match. Furthermore, Rhodes’ celebrations were cut short by Kevin Owens, who targeted the knee. As such, a brawl ensued between both men, which prompted officials to separate them.
The closing shot of SmackDown saw the former friends physically engaging despite several personnel attempting to hold them back. Fan footage captured the aftermath of the chaotic ending. In the clip, officials and referees accompanied Owens to the back while he stared down Rhodes. The American Nightmare got inside the ring before leaving with his title. Moreover, he celebrated with the crowd on the ramp.
In a week, Rhodes and Owens will square off for the Undisputed Championship at Saturday Night’s Main Event. This rivalry kickstarted after Rhodes chose to team with Roman Reigns at Bad Blood. Having feuded with Reigns and The Bloodline for years, The Prizefighter didn’t take too kindly to the decision.
Following weeks of building tension, Owens turned on Cody Rhodes by attacking him in the parking lot after Bad Blood. Since then, KO has been on a rampage, hospitalizing Randy Orton after hitting a banned move on him. Needless to say, this rivalry has turned personal very quickly, and fans can expect a brutal match at next week’s retro event.
Will Kevin Owens capitalize on Cody Rhodes’ injury at Saturday Night’s Main Event?
Interestingly, this won’t be the first time that Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens face each other for the Undisputed Championship on a PLE. A few months back, Rhodes squared off against Owens at Bash in Berlin.
Although KO failed to defeat his then-friend, there was a moment where he could’ve easily dethroned Rhodes. The latter entered the bout with an injured knee. When Owens had an opportunity to use that to his advantage, he failed to pull the trigger at a decisive time.
This time, however, Owens won’t hesitate in brutalizing The American Nightmare. In an intense promo weeks ago on SmackDown, The Prizefighter warned Rhodes, reminding him of what happened to Randy Orton. While he “loved” Orton, Owens said that he hates Rhodes and hinted at doing anything to destroy him.
