The unthinkable just happened at the Elimination Chamber. John Cena, in the final year of his professional wrestling career, turned heel for the first time in 22 years. The Franchise Player punched his ticket to a WrestleMania main event clash against Cody Rhodes. However, the latter didn’t expect the man he had idolized to betray him. Cena, alongside The Rock and Travis Scott, brutally ambushed Rhodes, leaving him a bloody mess.
The closing shot saw Cena “selling his soul” to his fellow Hollywood compadre while the trio walked away. Meanwhile, veteran commentator Michael Cole checked on Rhodes, who was laid out in the ring. After the PLE went off the air, WWE cameras panned to Cole and Wade Barrett helping The American Nightmare to the back. Rhodes looked visibly shaken as he couldn’t comprehend what had just transpired minutes ago.
The Undisputed WWE Champion arrived in Toronto with a major career-altering decision to make. A week ago, The Rock had returned on SmackDown with an intriguing offer for Rhodes. The Final Boss wanted Rhodes’ “soul” and demanded an answer from him at tonight’s PLE. After contemplating his decision, Rhodes explicitly told his former rival to “f*ck off.” Thereafter, he shared an embrace with the sixteen-time world champion, who ended up betraying him.
Needless to say, Cody Rhodes is now all alone. The former AEW wrestler will now have to shift focus to not only seeking vengeance on John Cena but also keeping his spot at the top intact. Rhodes will be squaring off against the 47-year-old star at WrestleMania 41 for his Undisputed WWE Title.
What John Cena had to say about his shocking heel turn
John Cena ‘selling out’ in 2025 wasn’t on any wrestling fan’s bingo card. After all, the WWE Universe was behind his path to making history by becoming seventeen-time world champion. However, Cena took the most unexpected route, opting to join forces with the corporation.

During the Elimination Chamber post-show press conference, Cena was scheduled to address his win and the heel turn. A stoic Cena showed up only for him to drop the microphone and leave without answering any of the media’s questions.
The wrestling community will have to wait a little longer to hear from Cena. The Franchise Player is advertised to appear during WWE’s European tour in the coming weeks. However, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him pay a visit to programming in the coming days.
