The Barcelona Open is due to take place between April 13 and 19 at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain, and is one of the leading stops on the traditional clay court season. The tournament comes just after the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo, which Jannik Sinner won.

In 2017, the center court of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona was renamed after Spanish legend Rafael Nadal, who finished his career with a record 12 titles at the Barcelona Open. Other notable legends such as Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, and Marat Safin have all featured in the tournament.

Holger Rune is the defending champion of the Barcelona Open, having overcome Carlos Alcaraz in the 2025 final to claim his maiden crown at the event. The Dane is not defending his title, though he’s working on his return to the tour next month having suffered an Achilles injury last October in Stockholm.

Alcaraz leads the field for the 73rd edition of the Barcelona Open. He entered the event at the back of the Monte Carlo Masters final defeat on Sunday (April 12). He lost to Sinner in straight sets after reaching the final for the second consecutive year. The Spaniard also dropped from the top of the ATP rankings and he’s currently No.2.

Lorenzo Musetti is the second seed at the tournament. He enters the event after a disappointing second-round exit at the Monte Carlo Masters. He has never won a match on tour since sustaining an injury that forced him to retire from his quarter-finals tie against Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open.

Alex de Minaur will feature at the event for the second consecutive year. The Australian star has continued to impress on the clay court but he’s yet to win a big title on the surface. He reached the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters last week before losing to Shanghai Masters champion Valentin Vacherot.

Other top players like Arthur Fils, Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Karen Khachanov, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will hope to cause an upset at the tournament. Jack Draper was meant to use the event as a warm-up for the Madrid Open next week but he retired from his opening match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the third set.

Barcelona Open prize money

The Barcelona Open has announced a 2.1 percent increase in the winners’ prize money this season. The champion will earn €545,400 ($637,990) at the 2026 edition of the tournament. The total prize money is €2,950,310. The winning doubles team will split $191,260 at the ATP 500 event.

The runners-up will take home $340,304, a 2.11 percent increase from last year. The quarter-finalist and semi-finalist will pocket $92,184 and $176,487, respectively. Below is the breakdown of the prize money for the Barcelona Open:

Round Prize Money
Winner$637,990
Runner-up$340,304
Semifinal$176,487
Quarterfinal$92,184
Round 2$48,562
Round 1$26,587
Q2$14,187

Spanish sensation Rafa Jodar has been handed a wildcard to the Barcelona Open. The teenage star will play at the tournament for the first time in his career. He claimed his first ATP title earlier this month at the Marrakesh Open, which helped him climb into the top 60 in the ATP rankings. However, he didn’t compete at the Monte Carlo Masters.

The World No.57 will also feature at the Madrid Open next week. His fellow compatriot, Carlos Alcaraz, has the chance to return to the top of the ATP rankings by just winning the Barcelona Open. He will defend just 330 points at the tournament having finished as runner-up last year. He will open his account against Finland’s Otto Virtanen in the second round of the event.
