The combined WTA 500 and and ATP 250 tournament of the Adelaide International is underway in The Drive and will continue until the Saturday, January 11. The event is set to witness some of the world’s best tennis players competing for a total prize pool of $2.5 million and world ranking points.
In the women’s circuit, 12 of the Top 20 players are competing for the title, with three in the Top 10 WTA rankings. Jessica Pegula leads as the Top seed, with Emma Navarro as well as Danielle Collins. Pegula and Navarro impressed at the US Open where the former finished as runners-up and the latter in the semifinals. Also, Collins was among the USA team that recently won the United Cup.
On the men’s circuit, there will be no Top 10 player, but World No.12 Tommy Paul will be the top seed, and Sebastian Korda ranked close to him. Also, Tomas Machac, who was part of the Czech Republic team at the United Cup, will feature with the likes of Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alexander Bublik, Brandon Nakashima, and Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
Women’s defending champion, Jelena Ostapenko, will play in the tournament. The Latvia star defeated Daria Kasatkina last year to win the title. She will also feature in the doubles alongside Su-Wei Hsieh, while Kasatkina opened her singles account on Monday (January 6) with a straight-sets victory over Olivia Gadecki.
Men’s defending champion Jiri Lehecka withdrew from the event on Sunday (January 5) after winning the Brisbane International. The Czech Republic star defeated Jack Draper in three sets in the final last year. This year, the British star will also not feature at the Adelaide International, as he’s still recovering from an injury he sustained during the off-season.
