The tennis world will soon be shifting its focus to a tournament where a huge prize money plus 1000 ranking points will be on the line. This only means that top players from both the ATP and the WTA will finally be seen in action.
The tournament is the Indian Wells Open- the first Masters 1000 of the season, as well as the third WTA 1000 of the season. In the previous two WTA 1000 events, Karolina Muchova defeated Victoria Mboko in the final of the Qatar Open, while in the Dubai Tennis Championships final, Jessica Pegula defeated Elina Svitolina.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will be competing for the first time since the Qatar Open, where the former emerged as the champion for the first time by defeating Arthur Fils. The Italian will be chasing his first title of the season as he failed to defend his Australian Open crown and later lost to Jakub Mensik in the Doha ATP 500 quarterfinals.
Sinner, who lost twice in the semifinal stage of Indian Wells, was ousted from the Melbourne Slam in the semifinals by none other than Novak Djokovic, who later lost the final to Alcaraz, which saw the Spaniard become the youngest seven-time Grand Slam champion as well as Career Grand Slam champion. The World No.1 is a two-time champion at Indian Wells, winning in 2023 and 2024 by defeating Daniil Medvedev. But he failed to complete the three-peat last year, losing to Jack Draper in the semifinals.
Medvedev will be chasing his third title of the season, having won the Brisbane International by defeating Brandon Nakashima and later the Dubai Tennis Champion after receiving a walkover from Tallon Griekspoor. The Russian has yet to win a Big Title since clinching his career’s first clay-court title at the 2023 Italian Open.
On the women’s side, World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka will finally be playing a tournament since the Australian Open, where she failed to clinch her third title with a three-set defeat to Elena Rybakina. Sabalenka then skipped the two WTA 1000 of the Middle East Swing.
The Belarusian is a two-time singles finalist in the first Sunshine Doubles event, reaching in 2023 and 2025, losing to Rybakina and Mirra Andreeva, respectively. The four-time Grand Slam singles champion has one Sunshine Doubles title to her name, last year’s Miami Open, which she won by defeating Pegula.
World No.4 Coco Gauff, the winner of three WTA 1000 singles titles, has reached one Indian Wells semifinal (2024). World No.2 Iga Swiatek is a former champion at Indian Wells, winning in 2022 and 2024 by defeating Maria Sakkari. The Pole was last seen in action at the Qatar Open, where Sakkari knocked her out in the quarterfinals.
