NASCAR Cup driver Noah Gragson has found himself at the center of controversy as both NASCAR and Legacy Motorsports have taken swift action by indefinitely suspending him immediately. As the news went to Twitter, fans and enthusiasts alike have triggered a flurry of responses regarding Gragson’s suspension.

The suspension comes after Gragson liked a racially insensitive post on Instagram, which depicted the Disney character Sebastian the Crab with George Floyd‘s face photoshopped onto it. The post replaced the iconic “Under the Sea” phrase with “Under the Knee,” alluding to Floyd’s tragic death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer in 2020, igniting nationwide protests against racial injustice and police brutality.

Legacy Motorsports, co-owned by racing legends Jimmie Johnson and Maury Gallagher, issued a statement explaining their decision to suspend Gragson because his conduct did not correspond with the team’s principles. Following the team’s decision, NASCAR suspended Gragson indefinitely, citing his conduct on social media as a violation of the Member Conduct section of the 2023 NASCAR Rule Book.

As a rookie in the Cup Series, Gragson’s future in the sport now hangs in the balance. Xfinity Series regular Josh Berry has been tapped to take over Gragson’s No. 42 car for the upcoming race at Michigan. Berry, who will be a full-time Cup driver next year, brings his talents and dedication to the track.

Although the length of the suspension was not mentioned, Gragson is expected to undertake sensitivity training before returning to the track. Some Twitter users criticized the decision to suspend a driver for liking a meme, while others voiced dissatisfaction with Gragson’s conduct. Given the team’s present troubles, several remarks also targeted Legacy Motorsports, and other supporters considered Gragson’s departure a positive move for the team.

Following his suspension, Gragson apologized on social media, expressing sorrow for his lack of attention and the implications of his conduct. The actions of NASCAR and Legacy Motorsports convey a strong message that racial insensitivity and unethical behaviors have no place in the sport. However, many individuals feel that it was Legacy’s long-desired goal to end existence.
