Diego Schwartzman heads to his maiden ATP Masters 1000 finals after an astounding week of thriller victories. The World No.15 toppled off the ‘King of Clay’ and defending champion Rafael Nadal in the quarters for the first time in his career. The Argentine further aced an epic victory over Denis Shapovalov in a 3 hour 15 minutes semifinals face-off.
Schwartzman on ‘Big 3’
Schwartzman expressed his respect for the Big 3 during the post-match interview, remarking on the past inability to use his chances well. “Rafa, Nole and Roger, I respect them deeply, they are the greatest in the history of tennis. But when I come on the court, I try not to respect them. In the past, I have often played well, but I didn’t take my chances. Now I did,” said Schwartzman.
Djokovic heads smoothly towards his 52nd Masters 1000 finals today, defeating Casper Ruud in straight sets in the semis. While, the World No. 1 is a step behind his record-breaking 36th Masters 1000 title, Schwartzman, the first Argentine to reach the Italian Open finals since Guillermo Coria in 2005. He looks forward to bagging his maiden Masters 1000 crown and enter the Top 10 ranking.
The Serb has toppled off the 28-year old in all the previous four career encounters. The last one being the 2019 Italian Open semifinals, where the Argentine got crashed in three sets.
