Swiss Maestro Roger Federer has taken a year-long break due to undergoing consecutive knee surgeries. With the Nitto ATP Finals 2020 underway, the 20-time Grand Slam champion reflected on his achievements and hardships at this coveted event.
Federer claims this tournament to be one of his favourites and this shows, since he has won the grand title for a record 6 times. Having been qualified to compete for 14 consecutive years from 2002-2015 speaks to Roger’s consistency and longevity.

During a video call discussion with fellow legends Tim Henman and Bjorn Borg, Roger recounted some of his most memorable moments that have come about in the ATP Finals.
Federer enjoys partaking in this event so much so that he claimed that he “would go to the moon” to compete in it.
Roger first broke through at the ATP Finals in 2002, and left everyone shell-shocked when he won all his Round Robin matches. It took him another year to win the title, but he succeeded to so for consecutive years. Further, these early victories opened Roger’s belief that he could “beat the best baseline players.” The Olympic gold medalist has another ace up his sleeve as he won 4 of the 5 titles from 2003-2007.
Roger faced off and won against Rafael Nadal in 2010 before lifting this title. The former gave insight as to what it’s like to compete against Rafa at that level. “There’s always pressure when I play Rafa indoors because I’m the favourite,” he said.
However, he proceeded to add that Nadal has “always been a tough player to play against.”
With Federer on the sidelines for a month more, many are vying his records. The World No.1 Novak Djokovic has a chance to match up with Federer’s tally of 6 titles if he claims this one. Even so, the Swiss will be back in action at the Australian Open 2021.
