Jalen Hurts is among the highest-paid athletes in NFL history. He signed a five-year contract extension for $255 million ($180 million guaranteed) in 2023 and yet stays in a cozy house with his family in Texas instead of a mansion like other players who have lucrative deals.
Hurts, born in Houston, moved to Channelview for high school, then to Alabama in college, but later transferred to Oklahoma before the Philadelphia Eagles drafted him in the second round of the 2020 draft. According to multiple sources, Hurts still lives at his family house back in Houston and rents a small apartment in Philadelphia during the season.
In an interview with GQ back in 2023, Hurts revealed he didn’t buy a new house because his mother, Pamela, didn’t allow him to spend his rookie contract money carelessly.
My mom and my grandma … won’t let me stay anywhere else.
Jalen Hurts said
The 26-year-old added that he had no plans on spending big on a new apartment to start with.
I didn’t buy a house or anything like that when I got drafted because it was just me. I didn’t need this big place just for myself.
Jalen Hurts added
The only splash he made with the rookie money was refurbishing some of the old parts of his home. He reportedly spent about $165,000 from his first million and a modest $1,000 shopping spree in Philadelphia with a couple of teammates.
Even after making $55 million per year, Hurts remains the same. He has no intention of changing it right now.
As a kid, I would always get gifts, and I always get gift cards, in the holidays… I never wanted anything [because] I was never really a needy person. Just start the same isn’t it? That’s always kind of the mentality. Give what you need kind of don’t abuse it a little bit… just because you can get it, doesn’t mean you need it.

In what did Jalen Hurts spend his first million dollars aside from renovating his house?
Hurts signed a four-year, $6.2 million rookie deal with the Eagles after being drafted 53rd overall. His average salary was $1.5 million, and his total guaranteed money was $2.8 million. He earned $1.08 million in 2022 and $1.3 million in 2023.

A small part of his money went to renovating his house, but there were a few additional costs to take care of. Hurts spent over $90 million in various areas: $15,000 for a holiday, $30,000 on living costs, $20,000 to his financial advisor and agent, $10,000 on training and conditioning, and about $30,000 on clothes and jewelry.

Moreover, Hurts set aside an additional $70 million for his sister’s college education.
