Where are they now: ‘The Best English Talent since Paul Gascoigne’ Jack Wilshere
In an ideal world he would be considered the best English talent who came from the academy of Arsenal. He impressed the world when as a 19 year old he turned the tables on the world’s most feared midfield trio then. During that night he bossed the likes of Sergio Busqets, Xavi and Andres Iniesta and kept them quiet through the match. As Shakespearian tragedies go, this would be his major highlight of career.
A career destroyed by injuries
He was one of the brightest talents in a decade of greatest football. From 2008-2018 some of the world’s best football players were at their peak and dazzling the audience. Despite the plethora of talent present there, Jack Wilshere’s name was known by many. He was Arsenal’s and England’s golden boy and was poised to lead both teams to glory.
Blessed with intelligence, vision and a wide array of passing skills Wilshere was considered to be a gifted player. To this day he can prove that he still has the same talent that made him a talent in that decade. However injuries have dealt a cruel hand to this bright talent. It could be said that Arsenal and England were robbed off a superior talent, one that could have as inspiring as Steven Gerrard.
All the injuries he suffered were season ending injuries. He missed most parts of the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons to injuries. Similarly he missed most of the 2018/19 and 2019/20 season through injuries. He barely managed 20 games individually in these two year periods due to injuries. He lost the trust of Arsene Wenger, the one manager that trusted him when it was known that he was injury prone. No player likes to be known as injury-prone and he got that tag anyway.
At the age of 28, he is one of the most prominent free agents available now. He will hope to avoid any other injuries in order to revive his career. Most players are at the peak of their career when they are 28 years old. Jack Wilshere will be hoping to get one more chance to prove to the world that he still has what it takes.
