Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff will clash in the Round of 16 of the China Open, as both seek to reach their first quarterfinals since August. Both players struggled during the North American hard court swing. However, since arriving in Beijing, they have enjoyed relatively comfortable wins.
Osaka beat her first-round opponent Lucia Bronzetti 6-3, 6-2 before rallying from behind to beat Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. In the third round, she beat American Katie Volynet 6-3, 6-2.
On the other hand, Gauff earned a first-round bye as she is the fourth seed. She opened her campaign against Clara Burel, beating the Frenchwoman 7-5, 6-2 to set up a third-round clash with Katie Boulter. Against the 26th seed, Gauff tightened up with 82 percent win on first serve but the British star did well to force a tie-break and failed to keep up the momentum. Gauff had a comfortable second set to win the match 7-5, 6-2.
The China Open is the first tournament where both players are playing under new coaches. Osaka partnered with Patrick Mouratoglou after parting ways with Wim Fissette, while Gauff is now coached by Matt Daly after she split with Brad Gilbert.
