The Tokyo Olympics was to be played in 2020, four years after the Rio Olympics in 2016. However, the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the event getting postponed by a year. But once the tournament commenced, it kept the audiences glued to their TV screens.
The athletes had their share of joy and jubilation as well. A number of athletes won multiple medals and created records in their respective sport. In this article, we take a look at the top five athletes who won the most medals at the Tokyo Olympics.
Caeleb Dressel (USA)
USA swimmer Caeleb Dressel was at the peak of his powers in the Tokyo Olympics from the word go. The 24-year-old grabbed as many as five gold medals, setting a tough benchmark for the upcoming generations.
He clinched the laurels in the Men’s 100m Butterfly, Men’s 100m Freestyle, Men’s 50m Freestyle, Men’s 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay and Men’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay. However, he fell short in the Mixed 4 x 100m Medley Relay.
Emma McKeon (Australia)
Australia’s Emma McKeon stole the limelight as well. The 27-year-old swimmer won the gold medal in four categories- Women’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay, Women’s 50m Freestyle, Women’s 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay and Women’s 100m Freestyle.
The youngster also won three bronze medals in the Women’s 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay, Mixed 4 x 100m Medley Relay and Women’s 100m Butterfly, taking her medal’s tally to eight. It will take a herculean effort to overhaul her record.
Kaylee McKeown (Australia)
Kaylee McKeown, another Australian swimmer, tasted quite a bit of success as well. The 20-year-old woman prodigy took three gold medals in the Tokyo Olympics. She got the laurels in the Women’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay, Women’s 200m Backstroke and Women’s 100m Backstroke.
She also bagged the bronze medal in the Mixed 4 x 100m Medley Relay. Apart from her heroics in Tokyo, McKeown is also the current world record holder of the women’s 100-metre backstroke.
An San (South Korea)
An San from South Korea found the Midas Touch in the Tokyo Olympics. She won three gold medals at the Summer Olympics. The 20-year-old also became the first archer in the history of the event to clinch as many golds in a single edition.
San bagged the golds in the Mixed Team, Women’s Individual and Women’s Team archery events. The youngster touched the skies very early in her career, and expectations from her is expected to go up from here onwards.
Lisa Carrington (New Zealand)
Lisa Carrington is the most successful Olympian from New Zealand, having won a total of five gold medals and one bronze medal. The 32-year-old flatwater canoeist upped her game in the Tokyo Olympics from the outset.
