It has some of the most competitive fields every year, with elite players picking up the Claret Jug. Here are some of the most decorated golfers at the Open Championship.
Currently, Tiger Woods is the only active player who has one the most number of titles through the history of the Open. Woods has won 3 titles- in 2000, 2005 and 2006. John Henry Taylor, considered to be one of the greatest golfers in the world, has won an impressive 5 Opens throughout his career. He won his first Open in 1894 at Royal St George’s, and his last one in 1913.
Who is the most decorated golfer of the Open Championship?
Tied with Taylor on the list of most decorated Open golfers are Peter Thomson, James Braid and Tom Watson. Thomson won the Claret Jug three times in a row in 1954, 1955 and 1956. Braid won the Open Championship five times between 1901 and 1910, and is one of the most decorated golfers in the competition’s history. American golfer Watson won five Open Championship titles between 1975 and 1983.
However, the most decorated golfers title goes to one name and one name only- Harry Vardon. The British golfer won an impressive six titles between 1896 and 1914. Vardon was one of the members of the legendary ‘Great Triumvirate’ along with John Henry Taylor, and James Braid. No one has been able to beat the six time win record, and it seems like no one is close to doing so either.
