In Short
  • The United States won its first Olympic gold medal in men's ice hockey since 1980 by defeating Canada in overtime.
  • The White House shared a post mocking Canada after the victory, referencing a previous comment from former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
  • The 2026 Winter Olympics concluded with Team USA achieving its most successful Games, winning a total of 12 gold medals.

The United States of America has officially ended its 46-year wait for an Olympic gold medal in men’s ice hockey with a win against neighbors, Canada, in the final match of the tournament. In the thrilling encounter at the Milano Ice Skating Arena, the US snatched the win in overtime after the two teams drew 1-1 at regulation time.

The United States of America set the goal account in the first period, with Matt Boldy shooting one past Jordan Binnington. The Canadians equalized late in the second period through Cale Makar. The game went into overtime after a goalless third period.

Just mere minutes into overtime, Jack Hughes sailed the puck past Binnington, straight into the net, cementing Uncle Sam’s first gold since 1980. Connor Hellebuyck made 41 saves with a .976 SVG%.

In the aftermath of the victory, the official White House X account shared a post mocking Canada, featuring an image of an eagle atop a goose fighting for its life. The post was circulated as a retweet of a message from former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, captioned, “You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game.

The rivalry between the United States of America and Canada sprang up after the two nations fought in the Four Nations Tournament earlier this year.

On a global political scale, the two nations have been distanced significantly following Donald Trump‘s rift with the Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney. Carney was famously uninvited by Trump from his “Board of Peace” after the former criticized their southern neighbors for weakening international rules and called for a collaboration among middle powers.

The US-Canada gold medal matches in ice hockey take place against the backdrop of emerging geopolitical tensions between the two, making the games increasingly political. The 79-year-old president has also congratulated the team for the win, posting on Truth Social following the game. He wrote on social media:

Congratulations to our great U.S.A. Ice Hockey team. THEY WON THE GOLD. WOW. WHAT A GAME!!! LOTS OF WINNING!!!

Meanwhile, Carney congratulated his team on a well-earned silver and noted that the team made their country proud.

Earlier, the United States women’s team also defeated Canada in a thrilling overtime game to secure their first gold since 2018. The game similarly saw the US and Canada draw 1-1 in regulation time before Megan Keller struck the overtime gold to win the game. Captain Hilary Knight scored the goal in regulation time, making her the highest points-getter for the US in the Winter Olympics.

The medal match also wrapped up the Milano Cortina 2026 after a fortnight of sporting excellence and glory. The Milano Cortina edition has become Team USA’s most successful Winter Games in terms of gold medals, with 12, surpassing their previous record of 10 set at the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics. They finished second behind Norway in the medal tally, their fourth time coming second overall, and the first since the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

Apart from the USA, Norway also eclipsed its best-ever showing, breaking the record for most gold medals in a single edition of the Winter Olympics. The hosts, Italy, also broke their previous bests in gold medals and overall medals. They finished fourth in the table for the third time in history.

The Netherlands finished third, ahead of Italy and behind Team USA with an impressive ten gold, seven silver, and three bronze. The Dutch were the dominating force in the speed skating events, with all of their 20 medals coming from the sport. This is also their best medal haul, rewriting the 8 gold finishes in the past three editions.

The Milano Cortina 2026 will officially come to a close with the Closing Ceremony at the Verona Arena in Italy, with the handover to the next hosts, the French Alps.
