Sunday marked a historic day for the Chicago White Sox, but not a day to be celebrated. They officially dropped out of playoff contention, marking themselves as the MLB’s earliest team to do so in the Divisional Era since 1969.

Their inconsistent performance and slump season continued to pile up despite their strong start earlier in the 2024 regular season games. They dropped out of the race after losing 2-0 against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park.

The challenge came after Saturday’s performance went awry and proved to be the setback for Sunday’s game. It’s been a tough season for the White Sox and their fans, considering their 123 lost games. Their record surpassed the worst score in MLB history set by Detroit Tigers in 2003 going 43-119 that season.

Interim manager Grady Sizemore complimented the team on their hard work, noting they’ll prove to be better next season. Bench coach Dough Sisson also admitted that “we didn’t play good baseball last night” and “we have to fix that.”

Things were addressed during the game, but we didn’t play good baseball last night. Not at all. And we have to fix that. I don’t believe in the ‘flush it’ thing…We have something to prove today. Games are lost more than they’re won.

Sizemore on the other hand complimented the players saying, “It was a great game all around.” He admitted that the team “gotta protect the ball” and “gotta play sharp” to stay focused to have a chance to win.

Despite the unfortunate outcome, the Chicago White Sox are showing the prevalence of not letting the same thing happen twice. They’ve had their own share of struggles and changes under GM Chris Getz and Grady Sizemore.

They said it’ll take time to rebuild but they are confident to get into 100% form before next season strikes back. Fans on social media are upset as the team acquired unfortunate records as MLB worst, saying, “Nobody saw this coming wow.” Another commented, “Sh*t wasn’t expecting this.”

According to reports, the White Sox has enough power in the minor leagues. If they want to pursue their playoff dreams, they’ll need to restructure their team focusing on and nurturing the minor league players to get into the MLB platform by next season.
