Kenyan middle distance runner, Hellen Obiri is all set to better the colour of her Rio silver medal with a sizzling run in the 5000m of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. Her personal best time is 14:18.37 minutes national record set in 2017.
Hellen Obiri has brought Kenya several top honours and medals. The star bagged a gold medal in the 2017 London World Championships in the 5000m. Two years later in the 2019 Doha World Championships, she again returned to the field and successfully defended her title. Obiri had clinched the gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and the 2018 African Championships.

Hellen Obiri is married to Tom Nyaundi. Tom is himself a former runner and now an avid athletics fan. He helps his wife in her training.
At the 2019 Doha World Championships, Obiri had finished 5th in the 10,000m race. The news had a negative impact on her and she considered going home to concentrate on 2020. However, it was her husband, Tom, who calmed her down and told her to focus on the 5000m instead. And as history knows it, the Kenyan icon went on to successfully defend her title.
“I was mentally confused but my husband called from home and told me 10k was not your race so I must focus on 5k. I said I was tired but he said I must do the 5k heats and see how my body was and it went well,” she was quoted as saying by pd.co.ke.
The beautiful couple is blessed with a daughter, Tania ‘Blessing’ Mocheche.
