The Super Bowl is over, and so is the Kansas City Chiefs’ chance at the unprecedented three-peat. While questions swirl about Patrick Mahomes’ struggles and questionable calls, Travis Kelce – who is speculated to have played his final game– bluntly assessed the defeat.

In contrast to all the times, when the Eagles’ offense was said to be careful against the Chiefs’ solid defense, it was Philly’s defense that overpowered the elite Mahomes in such a way that he was sacked six times– his career-high. As for the legendary tight end, he finished the game with four receptions for 39 yards, surpassing Hall of Famer Jerry Rice‘s record for highest Super Bowl receptions of 33.

Unlike all the times before, Kelce refused to address the media from the podium and instead spoke to them in the locker room. With an upset, the future Hall of Famer gave an unfiltered take on where things went wrong for his team, reflecting his own failure.

You know, hats off to the Eagles man. They got after us, all three phases. Couldn’t get it going offensively, I mean they just got after us on all three phases and then on top on that you know, turnovers, penalties, playing behind the sticks on offense, dropped passes. Not taking advantage of the play call and executing them. There’s a lot that goes into it. You don’t lose like that without everything going bad.

Like a true leader, the ten-time Pro Bowler took responsibility for the defeat by focusing on his own mistakes. But the Chiefs certainly deserve credit for holding the NFL Offensive Player of the Year, Saquon Barkley to merely 25 carries and 57 yards.

Why did the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIX collapse stun Travis Kelce?

Despite the allegations on the NFL officials of favoring the Chiefs, it’s undeniable that the team played one of its best seasons in 2024 as they entered the playoffs with a 15-2 record while holding the divisional title and AFC No. 1 seed. Reflecting on the poor 40-22 Super Bowl LIX loss against the Eagles, the All-Pro tight end couldn’t help but make a harsh realization.

We haven’t played that bad all year. [We] just couldn’t find that spark… couldn’t find that momentum… This team is gonna find till the end forever and you saw that. Even with the score late, we’re always gonna fight.

When the Chiefs were down to 24-0 against the Eagles at halftime, many assumed that the game was over for them but not Kelce. He was confident about his team making a comeback but in the end, he had to accept the reality.
